I also check in myself once in a while to see if someone (an NPC) has offloaded a bunch of something and brought prices down so I can stock up. I'll usually task him with buying wood/brick and the various foods at or slightly above market rates. Your best friend will be hiring an administrator at your counting house. Just be sure you have enough wood and brick to finish the businesses in time (you get the bounty on that mission if the businesses are built, not if they're fully employed and working so.). You can build what you want and make extra money. Pay attention to the town hall as there are often missions that involve building 2 of some type of factory. For example, when I'm in Lubeck, I tend to start building metal works first but there's often a lack of salt makers so I'll build those out too. See what's lacking or what you're trading more of. Once you're doing well with money, start looking at the cities you trade in, especially the one you've made your home in. I usually base myself out of Lubeck so I can use it to supply metal goods to most cities since they usually need it and use those other cities for what they've got: Reval/Riga for furs, Malmo for cheese, the inland cities for wine, etc. Over time, you'll get used to which cities are good for what. Use crayers for river cities and smaller or more specific routes (for example if you're setting up a 3-4 city route that passes supplies around) so you don't tap out the city before it can resupply the resource.Īll the while, use one ship yourself to handle "spot trades" where you go to cities that make something other cities want. Buy Cogs to handle larger trade routes that don't go down rivers. When you can afford it (remember to leave about 10k or so per automatic trader available so they can still operate) buy another ship and do the same thing. Just let the captain trade automatically (all goods in all ports). If you're in the north sea (London, Hamburg, etc.) you can do the same thing. If you're in the baltic (Lubeck, Danzig, etc.) you can set a route that hits a few cities on each coast. Then you set that crayer up with a captain and run him on auto across several cities. Just a few trips and you'll already have enough money to buy another crayer.

I usually build up enough cash from manual trading (if you're using the historical resource model, you'll find some great routes like Lubeck-metal goods, fish, beer-to Rostock/Riga-furs/pets, clothes-can be real lucrative. Once that's raking in the money, then you can start building businesses to supply materials you can sell on those routes. You need to get your trading empire up and running first. Building businesses in a city is very costly.
